Van Winkle Special Reserve 12 Year Old 2020
Sitting squarely in the middle of the Van Winkle family lineup, Van Winkle Special Reserve 12 Year Lot B is an all-around outstanding pour. For many, this bottle rests at the ideal intersection of age and strength. Each sip of this bourbon, otherwise known as Pappy 12 Year, delivers waves of decadent toffee, freshly toasted nuts, and soothing brown spices. The long, lingering finish can compete with any excellent cognac, making Van Winkle 12 Year Special Reserve Lot B a perfect after-dinner drink.

Approachable, even my wife enjoys it. But it could benefit from a higher proof. A solid drinker, just not the perfection I expected.

I managed to try it at a tasting, and the bourbon had a delicious mix of nutmeg and toffee, with a long, spiced finish. However, I find Weller 12 to be better value.

The bottle delivers well on the palate with its rich toffee and nutmeg. However, it’s a little overpriced for the subtlety in flavor.

The orange marmalade and light wood tones were a pleasant surprise. But that alcohol smell was overpowering at first. Still, a must-try for collectors.

Its oak-forward nature combined with a hint of lemon and coffee on the finish gave it an unexpected twist. It’s complex but definitely not for everyone.
Barry C. –
Balanced yet subdued. It’s a great pour, but I expected a little more depth. The toffee and nutmeg notes were nice but not mind-blowing.

I love the wood-heavy scent of this bourbon. It’s got that sauna-like feel with the slight incense, but not too overpowering. The citrus on the palate really makes it shine.

Lot B was a wonderful surprise. I got hints of walnut and orange, and the alcohol wasn’t as harsh as I feared. It’s rich and delicious, but maybe not worth the secondary market prices.

The bottle was fantastic, especially with the slight hints of wood and dark cherry on the finish. I also found the balance of sweetness and oak to be perfect.
Franklin T. –
For a 12-year bourbon, I expected a bit more complexity. It’s smooth, but I think Weller 12 does a better job at a fraction of the price. Good, but not outstanding.
Franklin T. –
Very enjoyable but a little shy on the nose. The caramel and subtle spice on the palate were excellent, though. I’d drink it again if the price wasn’t so steep.”
Robbie L. –
Lot B was really smooth and had the right amount of spice and sweetness. That said, I wish the flavors were more pronounced. The dark cherry finish was a nice touch.

It’s a fine sipper but overhyped. There are easier-to-find whiskeys that perform just as well, if not better, in blind tastings.
Josh Peters –
Managed to get a bottle, and while it’s good, I would recommend savoring it slowly, especially given the rarity.
Nate H. –
It was worth the wait, and I’m glad to have tried it. I’d give it 4/5. I hope to find another bottle soon.

The complexity grows with each sip. It’s a whiskey that evolves, but still not worth the astronomical secondary market prices.
